Varela, 29, has been capped 26 times by Portugal and scored a dramatic last-minute slogan in his country’s 2-2 draw with the USA at the World Cup in June.

The 5ft 9in winger scored five of Porto’s 59 league goals last season and helped guide the club to a Europa League quarter-final place.

“Silvestre is a vastly-experienced player, both with Porto and his national team, and I’m delighted we’ve managed to secure his services,” Irvine said.

“He’s got pace and power, gets his honest share of goals and is also a creator of chances for others.

“He’s a fantastic addition to our squad.”

Varela is Irvine’s fourth August signing, following Jason Davidson, Cristian Gamboa and Georgios Samaras – who all played at the World Cup – to the Hawthorns.

He had been linked to a go to West Ham.

Brown Ideye, Sebastien Pocognoli, Joleon Lescott, Chris Baird, Craig Gardner and Andre Wisdom have also joined the Baggies this summer.
