The Shout

Winning a share of Cannes’ Grand Jury prize in 1978, Polish director Jerzy Skolimowski’s bizarre psychological drama sees Alan Bates’ mysterious traveller invade the lives of bourgeois Devon couple Susannah York and John Hurt. His have fun piece? A terrifying ‘shout’ that he learnt from an Aboriginal shaman that’ll kill anyone who hears it.

With a cast that includes an early Jim Broadbent spot and a soundtrack from Genesis members Mike Rutherford and Tony Banks, it’s oh-so-English in its eccentricities, even if it never quite sustains its shaggy-dog narrative.
