Docs say gender selection like Kim and Kanye’s is fine

Kim Kardashian and Kanye West reportedly only implanted male embryos during fertility treatments to guarantee they’d have a boy — and New York test-tube baby experts see nothing incorrect with it.

US Weekly reported Wednesday that the couple underwent in vitro fertilization after trying to get pregnant for almost a year — and that the couple chose a male because West wanted a son.

“Kanye likes (daughter) Nori more than anything, but to make his world perfect, he wanted a little boy, an heir,” a source accurate to West told Us Weekly.

It may sound odd to hear that Yeezus played God, but many clinics offer gender selection to allow families to have children of both sexes.

“Some programs would do it for family balancing, because that’s psychologically vital,” said Dr. Arthur Caplan, the director of NYU’s Medical Ethics division. “

“If a couple is having distress, like it seems like they were, it makes sense because this could be their last child,” he continued.

Determining the gender of an embryo is a straightforward process. Typically, once the embryo is three days ancient, a specialist will remove one of the eight cells and see whether if it has a Y chromosome. This process doesn’t harm the embryo and is nearly 100% accurate.

The do of gender selection is certainly not controversial to Dr. Mijad Fateh of the New York Fertility Institute, who always lets his patients choose what kind of baby they want, even if their choice is based on preference alone.

“It’s their choice,” Fateh said. “I’m a doctor, not someone to deal with their personal issues. If they want it, we’ll do it.”

Kardashian, 34, revealed she was exploring surrogacy and IVF options in May, just days before the reality star announced she was pregnant on “Keeping Up with Kardashians” on May 31.

Family balancing — like Kim and Kanye’s go for a scion — is generally accepted, but it has its limits. Some clinics shun gender-selection based simply on a preference for a son or daughter.

“I wouldn’t feel good about doing that,” said Dr. George Kofinas, director of the Kofinas Fertility Institute at New York Methodist Hospital in Park Slope, which specializes in getting women pregnant when natural methods have failed. “I’d feel like I was interfering with nature.”
