Original from starring in VH1’s Drumline: A New Beat, Alexandra Shipp is taking on another foremost role. Shipp will play singer Aaliyah in an upcoming Lifetime biopic and she stopped by Huge Morning Buzz Live to tell fans that as a kid, she tried especially hard to rock the R&B star’s style.

While in middle school, Shipp saw a photo of Aaliyah posing with Justin Timberlake. Shipp loved the singer’s tube top sweater and matching long sleeve fingerless gloves. “I went to three malls with my mom,” said the actress, describing her search for the items. “I was gonna wear [them] on the first day of school!”

But after trekking around Phoenix, a Macy’s employee told Shipp that the outfit was probably custom made for Aaliyah. As a kid, Shipp may have cried about not dressing like the singer, but doesn’t playing the R&B icon make up for that disappointing childhood moment? In the movie, Shipp got to rock Aaliyah’s style as much as she wanted and looked just like her!

Watch the video above for the full report, and check out the clip below to see Shipp show how sharp she is in a unique guessing game.
