The Reds have agreed a £16million fee for the 24-year-ancient but looked-for to have him registered by midday on Friday for him to be able to face Manchester City on Monday (8pm).

The Anfield outfit are now talking personal terms with the ex-Man City striker and are insisting on a good behaviour clause in any deal.

But at his press conference at Liverpool’s Melwood training ground this afternoon, Rodgers refused to talk about his interest in Balotelli.

Rodgers said: “I can categorically tell you that I can’t speak about it or anything in anticipation of the player’s signed.

“If we sign anyone I will speak at length about them but in anticipation of then I can’t say anything.

“Every club has a code of conduct for the professionals that work and we have an extensive one for the players and staff so there’s no specific one for any one individual, it’s all staff and players.

“We’ve got a fantastic environment and culture here and nothing will ever shake or provoke that. It’s something I’ll always protect and it’s an environment where lots of players have improved and developed.”

Rodgers says any deal for Balotelli would not be the last of his costs.

He added: “We’ll just look at what we need in anticipation of the end of August. We don’t have much to do, we’ve done the bulk of our work.

“We’ve always said we were looking for another striker. No player would come here if I plotting it wouldn’t work.”
