Toronto designer Matthew Gallagher really gained his fashion education in Milan, Italy. After graduating from Milan’s Istituto Europeo di Design in 2012, Gallagher launched Maison Matthew Gallagher and relocated back to Canada to debut his mark at World MasterCard Fashion Week in 2013. Since then, he’s become one of the hottest Canadian designers, expertly combining minimalism and elegance to reveal a gorgeous, unexpected harmony. Here are his choices for what’s hot for fall 2014.

331A6491-cape-coatWhat are your three prerequisites for women this season?

My top 3 prerequisites for women this season are: A cape coat, a cashmere or mohair sweater and relaxed fit pants in denim. I think there is nothing more chic than pairing rich and casual styles together. A woman in my FW14 oversized, sumptuous camel hair cape coat, black mohair fitted turtle neck, cuffed relaxed fit denim and a killer pair of heels can do no incorrect.

What are your favourite trends this season?

My favourite trends for fall are the mix fabrics such as a soft silk skirt with a chunky knit sweater and capes or blanket coats that really add a sense of sophistication and elegance to any look.

What are your favourite garnishing women need to start wearing this season?

I think the flat is making a huge statement for the coming seasons. I am pleased to see this because I feel like most affordable brands have neglected the design of a flat shoe. We need to start appreciating this type of footwear and making it as chic and elegant as their sky high counterparts.

How do you define your latest collection?

331A6607-cape-dressFor my Fall 2014 collection I wanted to focus on construction and small details. I was inspired by an old photo of a 2 times splendid grandmother who came from a time of fussy dressing and uncomfortable clothes ,which is why I opted for stark and straight forward colours and fabric finishings.

If women could only buy one piece from your collection, what would it be?

I think the most versatile pieces from my collection are the cape coat and cape dress. The camel hair coat can be mixed, matched and dressed up or down while always looking polished, and the cape dress, although full of drama, can be worn alone, with tights, a slim pant and is very flattering to all body types.
