Review: ‘Sex With Brody’ on E! was done by Dr. Ruth

Sorry, Brody. It just wasn’t that excellent.
“Sex With Brody,” the new sex-talk show hosted by Brody Jenner, son of Caitlyn/Bruce Jenner and Linda Thompson, mixes clinical sex talk from Dr. Mike Dow with elbow-in-the-ribs guy sex talk from Brody and coy, mildly dirty girl sex talk from comedienne Stevie Ryan.
It has some amusing one-liners, along with stray pieces of useful information from Dr. Mike.
But the real goal of any sex-talk show, let’s be honest, is low-cost thrills. Its hosts or callers making “Dude, I can’t believe someone said that on TV!” moments.
“Sex With Brody” doesn’t get there. It’s not casing any turf that an army of radio sex-talk shows like Dr. Ruth and Dr. Judy Kuriansky weren’t casing 30 years ago.
These shows also have an inherent problem, which is that they have to keep topping themselves. Recounting last week’s terrible-sex anecdote is a non-starter, and once we know what the host and the customers are going to give up about their own sex lives, that’s old news, too.
In the first episode Brody has already upped the ante to a fivesome — which, for the record, he says was “terrible.” Just too many things to do.
So what next? Six?
They try to keep things original by having Dr. Mike host games like “sexpectations,” where Brody and Stevie give a male/female response to a question like, “What’s the worst thing your significant other can do in the bedroom?”
The answers are fine if not surprising. They also aren’t all that candid, since an E! show isn’t going to use four-letter terms or graphic slang.
This show is likely to go exactly as far as its one unique element: Brody Jenner’s name.
