The Soft Skin/Stolen Kisses

Two from François Truffaut in compelling melodrama The Soft Skin, a married man (Jean Desailly) meets an air hostess (Françoise Dorléac) at an airport; the result is Truffaut’s anti-Brief Run into (a film he dismissed as “the least sensual and most sentimental film ever wept over”). The players being French and this being the ’60s, the affair is more casually consummated.

The nuances of romantic relationships are probed in a sweeter manner in Stolen Kisses, a sort-of sequel to the seminal The 400 Blows. Though lacking in pathos, it’s fun to catch up with Antoine (Jean-Pierre Leaud), all grown up but a bit of a bumbler.
