Toronto World MasterCard Fashion Week Fall 2015- Day 5
With the fifth and final day of Toronto World MasterCard Fashion Week at David Pecaut Square officially wrapped, it’s been a brilliant, quick-paced week of Fall 2015 shows. As we look back on last night’s collections, from an Asian inspired Tatsuaki presentation to the dramatic grande end at Mikael D, here’s Real Style’s report on the latest and greatest from yesterday’s shows.
1) Tatsuaki: Founded by Dan Liu-Tatsuaki, the mark reflects the designer’s dual Chinese and Japanese social class. At Tatsuaki, the show opened with a giant plush panda positioned centre stage, while a dancer in a black tutu performed ballet on the airstrip. The collection’s theme of “Retro Aliens” paid tribute to 1950s and ‘60s trends. Pops of bright red, stitching and trailing hair extensions on the models brought an Eastern influence. Meanwhile, bubble parkas with fur hoods and black frock coats launched the designer’s outerwear collection.
2) Jaan Choxi: The Toronto-based menswear designer, who produces all his styles in Canada, made his official WMCFW debut this season. From slim-fitting, tailored black suits paired with skinny ties to a rich blue blazer with contrasting black lapels, the dapper looks existing a sleek touch to Fall 2015 menswear.
3) The Wild North: At The Wild North, emerging Toronto designer and University of Waterloo graduate Janet Han turned to icy temperatures for inspiration. The airstrip show opened with a series of coats trimmed with fur and topped with Arctic-worthy fur hoods. While the edgy fur bikinis may not have been a wearable look for the splendid Canadian outdoors, the cool colour scheme of burgundy, deep blue and light brown fit the bill for a chilling climate. With an (uninvited) appearance from an mad fur protestor during the show and an (invited) gorgeous husky on the airstrip, The Wild North show brought a touch of drama to winter!
4) 3.Paradis: Based in both Montreal and Paris, France, the line was launched in 2012 by friends and co-creative directors Emeric Tchatchoua and Raymond Cheung. At 3.Paradis, the new Placebo collection featured a severe medical theme with crisp white and red lines. From black zip-up jackets to fitted coats, tailoring was sharp and structured for a severe, clinical aesthetic which brought Fall 2015 style to the intensive care unit.
5) Stephan Caras: At Stephan Caras, the Toronto-based designer and his son, Kyriakos, unveiled a Fall/Winter 2015 RUBI collection of striking red designs. In right high-drama style, the Caras show opened with model RunwayRenee belting out a soulful tune, Reflections. Living up it to its title, the collection featured flowing V-neck dresses paired with matching pants and flirty tiered skirts in bright ruby tones. With a thigh-high slit on a red halter gown, a black jumpsuit with palazzo pants, spry colour-blocked frocks and hints of black lace, the seductive spirit was truly in the air.
6) Mikael D: Montreal-born designer and LaSalle The high classes graduate Mikael Derderian turned to imperial history to inspire his “Magical China” collection. On the airstrip at Mikael D, this translated into luxurious dresses in Fall 2015’s trendy red, cream and metallic shades. Evening gowns were decorated with airy cut-outs and lace detail. With a mix of high lacy necklines, plunging V-necks, voluminous skirts and asymmetrical hems, looks were vivid and varied. For a grand end which was worthy of a fairy tale princess, the designer sent a full-skirted white gown with an illusion neckline down the footbridge.
