WMCFW Interview with Soia & Kyo Creative Director Ilan Elfassy
With a Spring/Summer 2015 collection featuring laidback clean-cut styles paired with touches of inviting yellow, the Soia & Kyo airstrip show at World MasterCard Fashion Week in Toronto promised a original and free-vigorous season ahead. Real Style had a chance to chat backstage with creative director and founder Ilan Elfassy, who made the mark in 2004. Here’s a closer look at the inspiration behind the designer’s latest styles:
Real Style: What inspired your Spring/Summer 2015 collection?
Soia & Kyo was inspired by the thought of urban getting away from. You can be a city career girl who can getting away from to the park. You can make a lifestyle in the city, but you can also delight in some time to yourself in the park. There is a countryside colour palette, with sand and mushroom tones and yellow.
Real Style: Clarify your favourite essential spring pieces for the coming season.
A lot of long coats are coming back into fashion. We can see a lot of dripping styles, with a cocoon feel and tight sleeves. I like a leather jacket, so a leather bomber jacket is an essential for menswear. For women, I like a pop of colour when coming out of winter. We have a brick coloured leather jacket and a light yellow trench coat, with the two elements of function and fashion.
Real Style: Which styles from your latest collection are you most excited for?
There is the Ornella three-quarter trench coat with gorgeous fabric, with cropped sleeves, a belt and many options to wear the coat. We also have sand and mushroom colours in the collection.
Real Style: Soia & Kyo supports local Canadian production of its fashion. How exactly does this take place?
In terms of production, we have a designer team and a coat factory based in Canada. Why not keep the work in Canada, as opposed to sending it overseas?
Real Style: What defines the ideal Soia & Kyo girl, in your opinion? What does she wear and who is she?
The Soia & Kyo woman is down to earth, with simple yet elegant style. She cares about her appearance, but is not obsessed with it.
