You Might See More Security Guards Than Usual At The Movies This Weekend

Straight Outta Compton is set to dominate the box office this weekend, and Universal Pictures executives want to make sure moviegoers feel as safe as possible. That’s why they’re offering to reimburse cinemas for security guards during screenings of SOC this weekend, The Wall Road Journal reports. How awesome is that?

The choice stems from last month’s Louisiana movie theater shooting during a screening of Trainwreck that left two people dead, in addition to the ongoing racial tensions between police and African Americans. (People are still protesting the police tactics in Ferguson, Missouri that led to Michael Brown’s 2014 death.)

The film, which centers on the formation of hip-hop group N.W.A., also features its honest share of gang violence, so Universal bigwigs don’t want to leave anything to chance as folks head to the movies.

“I don’t think it’s really necessary, but we’re doing it for the public’s peace of mind,” said Rudyard Coltman, a Kansas City, Kansas and Portland, Oregon theater string title-holder, according to WSJ.

We disagree. This seems like a very smart go on Universal’s part. Better safe than sorry, right? Let us know what you think in the comments below.

Off somewhere thinking about the historical and cultural impact of Hoku.
