Embattled “Nightly News’ anchor Brian Williams has surfaced publicly for the first time since his NBC bosses slapped him with a six month suspension.

Williams turned up at a fundraising fete Saturday night for his high school alma mater, Mater Dei High in Middletown, N.J., which is on the verge of shutting down.

“This is Mater Dei. It’s been a very, very vital part of my life,” Williams told The Two River Times, in his first public comments since he was sidelined for repeatedly lying about riding in a military helicopter in 2003 that had been shot down during the Iraq war. NBC officials have banned him from talking to reporters about the circumstances surrounding his suspension.

“I had four splendid years here. I did not know it then, but it was the last degree I’d ever earn,” he said. “It’s a wonderful school, and it should be open for a long time, for everybody,” he added.

The gala, held at Shore Casino, was among numerous fundraising efforts aimed at helping Mater Dei High School raise $ 1 million to stay open.
