Julianne Moore: I don’t believe in God

‘I've been really lucky, but I feel I've completely created my own life,’ the Oscar nominee said. The Hollywood Reporter ‘I’ve been really lucky, but I feel I’ve completely made my own life,’ the Oscar nominee said.

Julianne Moore is on top of the world thanks to her award-winning performance in “Still Alice.” But in a new interview she admits to past struggles, including with religion.

The 54-year-ancient actress has been receiving raves for her role in the drama, and with her recent Golden Globe and SAG wins for best lead actress, is considered a shoo-in to win the Oscar for the first time in her decades-long career.

But Moore said that while she’s experienced success in her career, including four previous Academy Award nominations, she has at times felt adrift. Her mother’s unexpected passing from septic shock in 2009 devastated her so deeply that she she no longer believes in God, she admitted in a profile in The Hollywood Reporter.

“I learned when my mother died five years ago that there is no ‘there’ there,” she said. “Structure, it’s all imposed. We impose order and narrative on everything in order to know it. Otherwise, there’s nothing but chaos.”

Moore’s life felt particularly chaotic in the wake of her failed first marriage to actor-director John Gould Rubin in 1995.

Even though she felt satisfied with her professional career, she felt “lonely,” and that she “didn’t have the kind of personal life I wanted.”

So she decided to see a therapist, which the “Boogie Nights” star said helped her immensely.

“I learned that (my personal life) was as vital as my professional life,” she said. “I didn’t spend the time; I didn’t invest.

“One thing I used to tell my women friends was, ‘There’s an expectation that your personal life is going to take place to you, but you’re going to have to make your career take place. And that’s not right: You have to make your personal life take place as much as your career.’ “

Moore now has the family life she always wanted: She and her husband, director Bart Freundlich, have been married since 2003 and have two children.

The star said noted that that despite all her successes both at work and at home, she didn’t achieve it simply with luck.

“The thought that you’re the focal point of your own narrative and that you can make your life is a splendid thought,” she said, in a nod to “Small Women,” one of her favorite books.

“I really believe it. I’ve been really lucky, but I feel I’ve completely made my own life.”
