Kathy Lee & Hoda: From Venice to (Bruno) Mars and beyond

So much happened, it’s hard for us to figure what were the best and worst moments of 2014.

HK: For me, the best and worst together is the marriage of George and Amal Clooney. He was Hollywood’s most eligible bachelor, and now he’s not. So in one sense, it’s the most depressing report of 2014 — and the year’s most exciting and gorgeous report.

KLG: In terms of the worst of 2014, I think this was the year when many people lost so much confidence in our regime. I’m not a political animal by any means, but on almost any level you could not read the newspapers without saying, ‘I know longer believe in that one, I no longer believe in that one.’ I continue to believe in God almighty, but some of the worst tales this year were about how Ebola ravaged so many and the atrocities committed against people of faith all around the world. And on that note, I say ISIS is the worst report of the year.

There were also some splendid songs that came out during the year, but there’s at least one that we cannot agree on.

HK: I loved Bruno Mars’ “Upscale Funk.” No, it’s just not a good song. It’s the best song. It’s the “Pleased” of 2015. That’s the best song because it’s ancient-school funk, you can go to it and dance to it, it’s fun, it’s Bruno Mars, who can do no incorrect …

KLG: Except for that song.

HK: WHAT?

KLG: I adore him, but I can’t stand that song.

Last year we set some goals: Hoda wanted to make a composition video and raise money for pediatric cancer research, and Kathie wanted to write a book and donate the proceeds to the Salvation Army. Needless to say, we pulled both off.

KLG: Hoda raised so much money for pediatrics.

HK: And you raised a lot of dough for the Salvation Army.

KLG: It’s a good feeling.

HK: It is a good feeling when you say you’re going to do something and you do it.

KLG: And when it turns out more successfully than you dreamed.

HK: It is really vital to know that it’s never too late to try something new. Here’s an example. I wanted to take guitar, and my boyfriend wanted to do it with me. You’d think at 50 years ancient, “Why would I ever do that? I could never do that. I would be no excellent.” And blah, blah, blah. You know what? It’s one of the most joyful things I have ever done.

KLG: And you’re getting excellent!

HK: It’s so much fun. We played “Landslide” on the air.

KLG: And she’s picking! She’s not just strumming.

HK: I’m picking. I know it wasn’t splendid.

KLG: It was splendid! I was so impressed.

That’s what this year taught me … You can try new things, and it’s OK. And if you’re not perfect at it, so what? And why does it matter if you’re 50 or 60?

HK: That’s what this year taught me … You can try new things, and it’s OK. And if you’re not perfect at it, so what? And why does it matter if you’re 50 or 60?

KLG: It only matters if you’re not having fun.

Like everyone else, we’ve got goals for 2015, but what’s amusing is how they’ve turned out to be so different than in the past.

KLG: More and more, my life and my dreams are being overtaken by my kids, because they’re at a point in their life now where they are starting to do splendid work. Cassidy is a effective actress and loving what she’s doing. Cody is getting his master’s at Oxford in creative prose. I can’t wait to see what he’s going to write, and it all just brings me such joy.

HK: I have a book that’s coming out this year, which I’m excited about. It’s called “Where You Belong.” It’s about finding that place in your life where you feel like you’re home. There are so many people who were on the incorrect path and then somehow found the right one. I think we’re all struggling a little bit somewhere, and we always try to find exactly where we feel at home. This book will be filled with people who found it.

KLG: And left other things to find it …

In the new year, many people will be trying to turn over a new leaf or set out to do something new. Here’s our information:

KLG: Just do it. Set aside a small amount of time every day. Don’t make it so huge, like “I’m going to do this for four hours every day.” No. Start out with five minutes and try to build on it.

HK: For people who want to do that or make more elaborate changes, like find a new job — a splendid way to do it is take something you like and devote 10% of your time and 10% of your money to it. That way you still are not displeasing where you are in life, but in your head you’re putting stuff in a place where you want to be.

KLG: You’re investing in your future. Because you know what? If you settle for what you already have, you deserve what you get.
