In an impassioned defense of the imperiled horse-carriage drivers, actor Liam Neeson Tuesday night called it “unconscionable” to deprive them of their livelihood.

In a statement, Neeson said: “The Central Park carriage drivers woke up Monday morning to learn that the mayor decided to take away their jobs and make them cab drivers without ever consulting with them or so much as step into a stable.”

He said Mayor de Blasio “certainly has his hands full” and is a leader who “is tackling sensitive and delicate issues with leadership.”

But Neeson, who is Irish like many of the 300 drivers of Central Park horse carriages, said the mayor is dead incorrect on this issue.

“Deciding to strip these hard-effective New Yorkers of their livelihoods in the dark of night is unconscionable; undermining their stability and future,” he said.

Neeson, 62, narrated a 10-minute film about the industry last spring.

Neeson pointed out that New Yorkers and people around the globe are on the side of the drivers and like the city’s picturesque carriages.

“NY City’s historic and beloved horse carriage industry — devastatingly supported by New Yorkers and tourists alike — should be celebrated, not hurt,” he said.

The actor vowed to stick with the drivers’ produce to the end.

“The carriage drivers have won the hearts and minds of people worldwide, they have New York City behind them, are ready to fight and will continue their tradition in Central Park for generations to come and I will continue to proudly stand with them,” he said.
