Only Lovers Left Alive

Jim Jarmusch’s hypnotic take on the vampire genre files down the fangs in favour of bohemian ennui and a lustful passion for the arts. Tom Hiddleston and Tilda Swinton are spot-on as centuries-ancient lovers Adam and Eve, brought together once more to overcome Adam’s disillusionment as he laments the slow demise of culture at the hands of “zombies” (ie humans).

As he swoons over guitars to crackling vinyl, the vague plot seems to primarily serve Jarmusch’s own retro fanaticism, but this dryly witty ode to composition and literacy has never made the undead seem so warm-hearted.
