As Mickey Rourke proved in The Wrestler, splendid comebacks demand career risks. Arnold Schwarzenegger rocks a new look but doesn’t act well enough to lose his baggage in David Ayer’s chafing fusion of muscle-man nostalgia and modern indie grit, where elite DEA agents are targeted after scalping $ 10m in a drug bust.

Ayer complicates things with choppy camerawork, brackish banter, extreme torture and moral murk, but the testosterone whiff weighs heavy, right up to a daft twist clumsily steered towards indulging brand Arnie. There will be cigars…
