Sunshine On Leith

After his London debut Wild Bill, actor-turned-director Dexter Fletcher heads north for this foot-stomping take on the 2007 musical inspired by the tunes of those tartan twins, The Proclaimers.

George MacKay and Kevin Guthrie play two British soldiers back in Edinburgh after a tour in Afghanistan; Antonia Thomas and Freya Mavor the two girls in their lives.

The plot is hardly Shakespearean and the singing (particularly by Peter Mullan’s patriarch) the sort you’d hear at closing time.

But the emotions are ripped from the heart – and the flash-mob rendition of ‘I’m Gonna Be (500 Miles)’ is sensational. A real rough diamond.
