Top 5 Canadian Fashion Designers Who Have Made It On The Global Scene
With World MasterCard Fashion Week stealing the focus in Toronto from March 23-27, we’re excited to see another range of exciting Canadian collections make a splash on the airstrip. In honour of the upcoming Fall 2015 collections, we took a look at our top five Canadian fashion designers who have made it on the global scene. From Thomas Tait to Jeremy Laing, here are a few familiar Canuck names in the sartorial world.

1) Thomas Tait: After winning the coveted LVMH Young Fashion Designer Prize in 2014, this 26-year-ancient designer is beyond doubt a rising force in the industry. Tait is now based in London, England, but he was raised in a suburb of Montreal and educated at Collège LaSalle in Montreal. The up-and-coming talent relocated to London to pursue a Masters in Women’s Wear at Central Saint Martins The high classes of Arts & Design and graduated in 2010. At 22, he was the program’s youngest ever graduate. Now, he’s making waves with his basic black and white colour scheme and structured designs.

2) Erdem: The designer may be first name well-known today, but he was born Erdem Moralioğlu in Montreal in 1977. Erdem went to Toronto to attend Ryerson University’s School of Fashion and graduated in 2000. After an internship with quirky British designer Vivienne Westwood, effective for Diane von Furstenberg and studying at London’s Royal The high classes of Art, he launched his line in 2005. Since then, he’s become known for his sweet floral prints, feminine fabrics and flowing, ladylike dresses. In December 2014, he was titled Womenswear Designer of the Year at the British Fashion Awards.

3) Mark Quick: The knitted garments designer may be based in London, but his roots are proudly Canadian. Quick was raised in Winnipeg, and went to the U.K. to attend Central Saint Martins in 2002. After a BA, Quick also completed an MA at this top London fashion school. Since then, his bold, funky and structured knits have made their mark on the airstrip.

4) Dean and Dan Caten of DSQUARED²: The 50-year-ancient twin brothers were born to an Italian father and English mother in Toronto, and raised as Dean and Dan Catenacci. They both went to New York City’s esteemed Parsons School for Design, but only stayed in school for a release semester! Despite their lack of formal education, these brothers are beyond doubt powerhouses in the fashion game. Their line, DSQUARED², was launched in 1992 as a menswear line, after the brothers relocated to Italy. Since unveiling their first womenswear collection in 2003, this dynamic duo has become known for their denim, sharp tailored jackets and pops of bright red on the airstrip for ladies.

5) Jeremy Laing: Peterborough, Ontario-born Laing went to Toronto to attend Ryerson’s School of Fashion. While the Toronto-based designer announced that he was taking a leave from the fashion industry in 2014, he beyond doubt made a name for himself since the 2005 launch of his first collection. He became known for his collections at New York Fashion Week, where he sent printed textile designs, edgy zippered frocks and flowing blouses down the airstrip.
