Toronto World MasterCard Fashion Week Fall 2015- Day 1

With Day 1 of World MasterCard Fashion Week at David Pecaut Square in Toronto officially wrapped, the Fall 2015 shows unveiled a mix of vibrant, embellished looks paired with darker tones for the season ahead.  From a colourful explosion at Mikhael Kale to the sophisticated neutral colour palette and statement layers at Pink Tartan, here’s Real Style’s report on the latest from the Toronto runways.

MIKHAEL KALE

1) Mikhael Kale: The Toronto-based designer, who studied fashion at London’s Central Saint Martins, opened his WMCFW show with the 2013 Daft Punk song Giorgio by Moroder. The Italian songwriter and producer’s disco tunes clearly inspired Kale’s creations for Fall 2015, as the designer featured a bold 1960s inspired aesthetic in his looks. From a beaded tweed jacket with Mongolian shearling to leather-detailed tweed pants, texture played a foremost role in the collection. Beaded shift dresses and organza frocks in eye-catching orange brought a vibrant, funky vibe to fall and winter looks. Meanwhile, black leather cut-out dresses, belted frocks, motorcycle jackets and maroon pants paired with a matching cropped vest balanced out the use of playful colour.

Sid Neigum

2) Sid Neigum: The rising designer was born in Alberta, but trained in New York City and now bases his mark out of Toronto. At Toronto World MasterCard Fashion Week last season, Neigum was titled the winner of the Mercedes-Benz Start Up for 2014. For Fall 2015, the up-and-coming talent sent his signature, black and white structured designs down the footbridge. Inspired by origami, Neigum kept a monochromatic colour palette with crisp, textured cuts. From architectural, flowing white dresses with high collars to a black scrunched gown, statement looks were sophisticated and neutral.

PINK TARTAN

3) Pink Tartan: Made by Toronto-based designer (and wife of Joe Original founder Joe Mimran) Kimberley Newport-Mimran, the mark is a mainstay on the Toronto runways each season. At Pink Tartan for Fall 2015, oversized knits made a splash on a airstrip decorated with a cloud-inspired art installation. From a furry scarf paired with a patterned navy blue and white coat to a plush fur vest worn over a long white dress, the focus was on warmth and layers. Cropped dark trousers with wide legs and chunky belts worn over outerwear made their mark on the airstrip. The mix of creamy white and light brown hues and the occasional pop of darker colour brought fall elegance to mind.
