Brooke Guinan is the New York Fire Department’s first and only transgender firefighter and has been gaining lots of attention after she released a poster for the Vocal Organization for Global Courage and Equality’s “So Gay So What” campaign. The poster features Brooke proudly, standing with a shirt that says “So trans, so what?” in a weep for an end to transgender discrimination.

This third generation firefighter is in her sixth year with the force and is passionate about raising awareness of discrimination against transgender people in the workforce and to battle stereotypes about effective as a firefighter. “Most queer people think that being a firefighter, a cop, or having a regime job is unattainable. What a lot don’t realize is you can do it,” she said in a statement to Day after day News. Yas girl! Way to go, Brooke!

Here’s to our #YASGirl of the week Brooke Guinan for raising awareness for gay and transgender rights!
